History: Was a once Grammaton Cleric on his homeworld, Libria. After the fall of the Tetragrammaton, Lane was befriended by another version of Bruce Wayne and enlisted as The Shadow of the Bat in The Batman's quest to instill some order in their anarchal society. After a fight against invading aliens and witnessing Bruce's death, Lane was pulled into the current dimension after detonating an experimental nuclear device to eliminate the alien invasion. Spent a fair amount of time spent in limbo on this earth (some of that recovering from wounds received in the fight with his home world's aliens), and the current version of Bruce Wayne took advantage of Lane's training and position of not existing in this dimension and convinced him to once again become the Shadow of the Bat in a somewhat downgraded role in The Batman's retinue of cohorts. Now regrets being a Cleric in certain aspects - especially all the killing. Feels somewhat ashamed about what he once was and his ability to kill without remorse. Bruce fabricated a cover story and documentation for Lane's history on Earth and started his own Technical Security Consultant firm under the umbrella of Wayne Industries. After a run-in with some especially nasty bad guys as The Shadow, Lane was pretty sure he had died at one point, but prefers not to think about it and remains in denial. There was a legend on Libria about the last living Grammaton Cleric being immortal – and knows that quite a few were killed before he left that world. He still believes the legend is a myth. Has learned through researching information on dimensional shifts of a new theoretical astrophysics belief that the universe creates anomalies called coalesce to right cosmic elements out of balance. Somewhat believes this may be a clue to why he was pulled into this dimension and is trying to find answers. Lane kept most of his history with the Tetragrammaton and the true nature of the former role of The Shadow to himself after learning how this Batman/Bruce combination felt about lethal violence. A combination of disillusion, grief for losing 'his' Bruce and home world, and general feeling of detachment to life is making him want to leave Gotham in search of something, anything to make his new existence worthwhile. Knows there is an organization called Torchwood that keeps track and locates any alien artifacts or visitors that may be trying to find him. Afraid of what they might do to him, but would like to know what they know about dimensional shift. Past Background Occupation: Grammaton Cleric First Class Education: Tetragrammaton Monastery, Cleric training Academy Activities: Cleric duties, collected artifacts in secret while posted to Section 14. Home: Section 14 Finance: Funded by the Tetragrammaton History: Was born to another earth (Libria) that led a different path in history that included many wars and human atrocities. Survivors of the last world-wide war banded together and formed a society that outlawed all extreme human emotion and every aspect of individuality and expression. Forced treatment by mandatory dosing of a medication called Prozium that eradicated emotion off all types to induce a compliant, non-violent society. The law enforcement faction of this society were the Grammaton Clerics, a faction of highly trained individuals who excelled in combat of all types with a focus on hand-to-hand combat and a type of Gun Kata (martial art style use of guns and mathematical equations to evade being shot.) Society generally fears and respects them, as they have the power to arrest anyone suspected of committing a "sense offense" and executed. Was trained in the intuitive arts to be able to sense when someone was experiencing undue emotion. Lane was raised in a monastery, as Clerics had become a warped sort of religious figure without any ties to actual religion. His parents gave him up to the Tetragrammaton at the age of 7 to enter the monastery and had limited contact with them thereafter. Rose through the ranks of the Grammaton Cleric structure. Was eventually assigned to a post in the far outskirts of the city because Clerics who were considered "nice to look at" were a sense risk and used in less populated areas, so feels fate has more to do with the future than choice. After Cleric John Preston's excution of councillary leaders and the fall of the Tetragrammaton governmental structure, a revolution against the use of the Prozium drug that suppressed emotion began. The revolution eventually evolved into anarchy and a movement began to kill all the Clerics. After his partner Paul was killed, Lane avoided detection by remaining in a mostly unpopulated area known as the Nethers and hiding his history as a Cleric. Lane was befriended by a man named Bruce, who was beginning a one-man campaign to maintain a sense of order in a society gone mad. In order to facilitate this, Bruce had invented an alter ego that operated at night under the guise of a man dressed as a bat to instill fear in those wreaking havoc. He enlisted Lane in his duties and Lane became the Shadow of the Bat, a character modeled after the Batman with subtle differences – The Shadow used pistols with obvious Cleric style. Two years into their endeavor, an alien faction invaded the planet and began eradicating all humans in order to take over the planet for themselves. Bruce and Lane put up an honorable defense until Bruce was killed and Lane was forced to resort to using a nuclear device to eliminate the aliens and therefore sacrificing himself to rid the planet of Them. When the device detonated, it set off a chain of cosmic events that pulled Lane into a neighboring dimension in time/space and deposited him into Gotham on present-day Earth. He was discovered by this dimension's Bruce under the guise of a very different Batman and held in custody until the status of his situation was known. Torchwood was not notified, which was protocol for interplanetary contact. Without any ties to this world, Bruce took him in and convinced him to join The Batman as The Shadow of the Bat again.
